Last week we hosted South End store Follain at Forty Winks. We chatted a lot about how important it is to wear well fitting lingerie and to invest in natural beauty products. What we put on our bodies matters!
If you missed it, here are the answers to some FAQs from both Forty Winks and Follain.
How should my bra fit? Your band should fit comfortably but snugly when hooked on the outermost hook. Run one or two fingers between the band and your back, if you can barely fit one, it is too small, if you can fit more than two, it’s too big. The cup fits correctly when the center of the bra is tacking against your sternum, separating your breasts without digging. Your breasts should completely fill the cups, there should be no “double boob” or gapping.

When should I get fit for a bra? If you’ve never been fit, now’s the time! Once sized, we recommend that you get refit once a year. Also it’s a good idea to get refit after any hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause, or going on or off birth control.
How can I avoid back bulge? Wearing your bra lower on your back will help eliminate this, creating a smooth silhouette. Buying a bra with a large band, to eliminate bulge, will only cause your band to ride up creating a lumpy effect in the back and a saggy effect in the front.
Tell me about the fabrication of my bras and underwear. Most bras are fabricated from Polyamide and Elastane. Polyamide is a great fabric for bras as it is lightweight, easy to wash, quick drying, and resistant to mildew. The fibers guarantee shape retention and are crease resistant. For underwear, look for a cotton gusset for daily wear.

Is underwire bad for you? No. There is no scientific research that links wearing underwire bras to any harmful outcome. We encourage customers to choose bras that make them feel comfortable and supported.
Can I wear a soft/lace cup bra every day? Yes! Soft cup bras are often very comfortable for everyday wear. They mold to your body for a supportive, natural shape and work well for small and large busted women alike. You’d be surprised to see just how invisible they are under your shirts!
How many bras should I own and how long do they last? We suggest two basic everyday bras, a strapless, and a sexy bra that makes you feel incredible. Alternating between bras will help maintain the elastic, extended the life of the bra. We recommend reassessing your bras every 6-8 months. The fewer bras you own, the more often you’ll need to replace them.
How should I wash my intimates? We suggest hand washing with a gentle detergent specifically designed for intimate items. Delicate wash contains ingredients that preserve your underwear and that are also kind to your skin.
Why is this bra worth the money? Bras are made from as little as 10 or up to 40 different pieces. Since a bra fits so closely to your body, even a fraction of an inch can throw off the entire fit. Bras are sewn with a zigzag stitch which allows for stretch and movement and will not pop under daily stress. The grade of materials, construction, and labor also impact the price.

And now from Follain (read more about this awesome shop here www.shopfollain.com)
What is Follain? A new beauty retail store in Boston’s South End, with a curated selection of healthy skincare, hair care, and cosmetic products from 30 U.S.-made brands.
What is the biggest difference between Follain and other beauty stores? Every product at Follain is both clean, beautiful, and effective. The products have no unsafe chemicals, and they are also considered “spa-grade” for their efficacy.
What are the most popular products at Follain now? RMS Un-Coverup; Earth Tu Face and Shamanuti Face Cleansers; Soapwalla Deodorant Cream; Rica Body Butter; and, of course, our refillable hand & body soaps.
What are the ideal steps in a skincare regime? Generally, we recommend the following skincare regimen: 1) Cleanser; 2) Toner; 3) Serum; 4) Eye Treatment; and then 5) Moisturizer. However, each person’s skin is unique and requires its own personalized system. We can help you find a system that suits your lifestyle and maximizes your skin’s health and glow.
What does the name Follain mean? It is Gaelic for “healthy, wholesome, and sound.”
Who founded Follain? Tara Foley, a passionate advocate of skincare education, and a longtime healthy beauty blogger, with experience in skincare manufacturing and lavender farming.
Why is it important to use healthy beauty products? Our skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs the products we apply to it within seconds. Just like a healthy, wholesome diet, healthy and wholesome skincare promotes a healthier you.
Why a healthy beauty store? Other places, like the E.U., ban unsafe chemicals from beauty products, but the U.S. does not. It is up to us, as consumers, to make healthy choices when it comes to beauty purchases, but the search for clean, effective products can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Follain does that legwork for you–all of our products are clean, pure, and effective–and we let you test the products in store before purchasing!
Does Follain sell gifts? Yes. Most of our products are not sold anywhere else in the Boston area, so they make great, unique gifts. Travel kits, candles, body soaps, lotions, bath products, and refillable soaps are all extremely popular gifts. Who wouldn’t love to receive the gift of healthy beauty?
Are Follain products sold online? Not yet! Our goal is to get you into the Follain store, for education and product sampling. We might sell products online one day, but for now our website is purely informational. We also provide regular store updates and industry news on Facebook and Twitter.
Sure we’re big proponents of a robust lingerie collection, but during the fast paced summer months, sometimes it’s easier to keep it simple by finding a wear-with-anything nude t-shirt bra. Look for a snug band that won’t ride up (how annoying is that?!) and cups that lay smooth underneath tight tees. Most of the bras shown below are convertible to racerback and/or halter styles giving you wearability options and more bang for your buck.
Questions about fit? Stop by for a bra fitting and we’ll help you get it just right.

Harvard educated and therefore a local for life, Laura aka the mastermind behind Lola Haze loves lingerie that’s built for day to night wear. Our first foray into the brand comes by way of one smoldering yet versatile bodysuit; it’s easy enough to wear during the day (yes, it snaps at the crotch) and still quick-change appropriate for sexytime. Perfect.
Daytime: Layer the bodysuit under high-waisted black skinnies and top it off with a sheer black tank.
Nighttime: Rock a decidedly parred down look by donning a simple garter band and a pair of sky high heels.
How would YOU wear this little lovely? Let us know!
Fortnight has always been a personal favorite of mine. I’ve worn their Angie bralet practically into dust and I’m still wearing it. Yup, I love it that much. God help me when it actually wears out.
So I’m pretty excited to see that our customers have responded so amazingly well to the Mira Slip. The cups are similar to the Angie, supportive and opaque while the body is a mix of nylon and lace that highlights all the parts we generally want to highlight.
It’s sexy and feminine and sophisticated all at once.
Perfect for a holiday wishlist.
I love the subtlety of this lingerie shoot. Often styled shoots can feel contrived or too high fashion leaving me feeling totally disconnected from the lingerie. Feelings of “I’m not skinny enough, tan enough, booby enough” run through my head leaving me uninspired and even discouraged.
But not so here.
The bralets and the simple silk robe, plus some red lips and sexy hair (easy enough right?), paint an accessible picture instead of some unattainable “ideal”. I think she looks drop dead gorgeous but in an every-woman sort of way.
What do you think of her simple lingerie looks?
Today I have butterflies in my stomach. It’s a feeling I’m getting used to on election days: a mix of excitement about having the right to make a choice about how our country is run… and a little bit of fear about how things will turn out. No matter who you choose to vote for, the important thing is to take the opportunity to exercise this civil liberty! So get out to that voting booth!!!
To bring some humor about elections and nostalgia of elections past… Here are some favorite elections scenes from TV shows and movies:
Sean Penn as Harvey Milk recruiting voters in Milk (2008). What a great line to get people to register: “Hey! I like the way those pants fit!” That would get me right in line… But no matter how well your pants fit, I guess you have look like Sean Penn to be able to pull of the Canadian Tuxedo…
A truly “inspired” class president speech in Election (1999) : “So vote for me because I don’t even want to go to college. And I don’t care. As as president, I won’t do anything.”
And who can think class president election without thinking of Napoleon Dynamite’s epic dance??? Pedro’s message is short and sweet: “If you vote for me, all your wildest dreams will come true.”
Cutty taking his morning run on mayoral election day in B-more on the Wire Season 4 Episode 6…
Pappy O’Daniel and his cronies discussing strategies for winning the election for governor in O Brother Where Art Thou (2000). Could they possibly wear their pants any higher?
And the classic Citizen Kane (1941) election speech…
Last, for a bit of nostalgia over Obama’s victory in 2004. Barack and Michelle’s first dance at the inauguration ball. Makes me tear up. every. single. time.
Ari & the Forty Winks gals
I would go crazy with silk robes from La Fee Verte and Ari Dein.
I’d buy me some meant-to-be-seen neon from Mimi Holliday
I’d pick up a basic, wireless, and ohhhh so comfortable black bra from Fortnight.
And then maybe I’d buy something brand spankin’ new…like the new colorway in the Marlies Dekkers Dame de Paris balcony bra.
Katie looking lovely in the Maison Close Rue des Demoiselles bra.
Congrats to our friends at the company (such sweethearts!).
